What is Your Name
Mayamma, a twenty-two-year-old orphaned Nigerian girl with a knack for telling stories, escapes from her slave mistress to attend a once-in-a-lifetime but incredible opportunity. If victorious, she will rise to become somebody in a way that could change her sense of self. When she walks into the room where the pitch will take place, Mayamma plans to be herself. She knows it would be a risk because regular interviews are frosted with set expectations of what to say and how to act. However, Mayamma is not wrong as the pitch starts off on an awkward note. The irritation of the panellists and their insistence of Mayamma’s surname will leave them in awe as it forces Mayamma to narrate the trajectory of her lost identity from Bayelsa to Lagos and a life full of molestation. Mayamma is unsure of what the reaction of her threemember audience might be as she reels out her experiences in a most dispassionate manner. She, however, weighs the option of a return to her slave mistress should the pitch be unsuccessful but the responses of her audience leaves Mayamma perplexed and sets the stage for a new life.
