Aisha represents a people who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of armed conflict in North-East Nigeria. This book chronicles real-life stories of people displaced from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States in 2014 who now live in the Area 1 IDP Camp, Durumi, Abuja. It describes their escape from conflict and the hazardous journey to the Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Abuja. But what happens now that they find themselves living in a camp, miles away from home? What happens to these people who have lost loved ones and properties and have no one to call family? Do we consider the mental health effects on people who have experienced traumatic circumstances that keep playing back in their minds - the death of loved ones, and women who were left to bury the dead? How do we rebuild their lives and restore dignity? How do we communicate to them that their dreams are still valid? How do we ensure that they are able to rise above their current situation because there is great potential in every one of them? This book aims to educate and create awareness on the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who are victims of the BokoHaram Insurgency in North-East Nigeria. It also highlights solutions around different aspects of displacement including coordinated camp management systems, mental health support, and economic empowerment. I had a home, friends, family, education and a community – one day, all of that changed.
